Hidden Homelessness and Random Bald Men

Over the years I’ve tried to force myself to be as open as possible about my experiences with mental illness and addiction. It is not always comfortable and I fear that it sometimes comes off as looking for a pat on the back which is probably the hardest part for me to deal with. I’ve had enough patronizing smiles to last a lifetime.

All I ask of myself is to, hopefully, reach one person who resonates with my experience and can find the courage to reach out to me or anyone else and take the risk to better their lives as well.

Here is a link to an article I wrote for Visions Journal, a mental health and substance use publication out of UVic, about my experience with hidden homelessness. As I don’t have any high-resolution photos of myself, Visions chose to use a photo of some other bald guy for the “Author Photo”. I suppose we all look the same…

Go on and give it a read. I can’t imagine how much more dire the situation has become out there, my heart goes out to anyone struggling with housing insecurity and the impact it has on their mental wellbeing.
